Back-to-School Time Capsule

Back-to-School Time Capsule

Want a fun, creative way to start the school year? We’ve got it covered. A time capsule is an inventive and beautiful project which children can fill with memories, keepsakes and of course, their goals for the year. Open it up on the last day of school and enjoy the trip down memory lane!

A treasure chest of memories for you and your child…

What you will need

  • An old box (shoebox size is perfect) or any small container/tube
  • Paper, markers, beads, crayons, glitter, anything for decorating 😊
  • Small mementoes to add to the capsule (a favourite toy, book etc.)
  • A family picture (optional)

Creating the Time Capsule

Now’s the fun part. Time to create an awesome time capsule!

  • Decorate the container using bright colours, stickers, and glitter. Anything works. Don’t forget to add your name, age, the year, and the name of the school.
  • Fill the time capsule with memories. These could be anything from a personal letter you and your child write to yourselves, to a special toy, a newspaper with the current date, a list of goals for the year, family pictures, special drawings and so on.
  • Why not include a “My Faves” list? Get your child to write down all their current favourites like their favourite colour, food, song, book, game and movie. This will be a fun list to read in a year’s time.
  • Slip in a little something special. Anything that makes them feel happy, such as a lucky charm, or a picture, or even a small gift to unwrap at the end of the year.

What to write in the Future You letter: some ideas

  • "When I grow up, I want to be..."
  • "If I could have any superpower, it would be..."
  • "My favourite place in the world is..."
  • “One thing I’m really good at is…”
  • “My wish for next year is…”

Don’t forget!

Parents, don’t forget to snap a photo of your child holding their time capsule before sealing it up, and save it in a secure folder to show them on the last day of school.

Then, it’s time to bury the time capsule in the garden or hide it away in a corner of the house. Just don’t forget where it’s been hidden!

On the last day of school, bring out the time capsules and give each child a moment to reflect on how they’ve grown. It’s a powerful and rewarding way to end the school year. ♥️
