Did it feel like the longest winter yet? You’re in good company! It’s been a crazy winter season for sure, so let’s say goodbye (hopefully) to the extreme weather and torrential winds and rain and enjoy a healthy and happy summer!
At this point, this should go without saying. We live in South Africa – we need to wear sunblock every day. Protect your skin from the harsh sun by wearing sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF), sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. South Africa's sun can be quite intense, and sunburn can lead to serious health issues. Apply sunscreen regularly, especially if you're spending time outdoors.
South African summers can be blisteringly hot and humid, making it vital to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and consider carrying around a reusable water bottle. You can also enjoy fresh and tasty options like iced herbal teas and water-rich fruits like watermelon and oranges.
Allow your skin to breathe. Opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen to help your body stay cool and comfortable. Loose-fitting clothing allows for better air circulation, reducing the risk of overheating and heat-related illnesses.
Sun’s out, we’re out – but so are the insects, especially mosquitoes! Keep a stick of insect repellent handy, wear long sleeves and pants in the evening and sleep under mosquito nets if you're in a high-risk area.
Take advantage of the abundant summer produce. Load up on fresh fruits and vegetables, such as mangoes, avocados, and citrus fruits. These health helpers aren’t just delicious, they’re also packed with essential vitamins and minerals.
Higher temperatures (and the inevitable loadshedding) can lead to faster food spoilage. Keep perishable foods refrigerated, and if you're having a braai, ensure that the meat is cooked thoroughly to avoid foodborne illnesses. Don’t forget to wash your hands frequently to keep germs at bay.
It’s time for picnics, beach walks, exploring nearby parks and taking hikes, but be careful not to overexert yourself. Heatstroke is a real concern during the summer, so if you’re venturing out, make sure you have enough water, sunblock and a small first aid kit to handle emergency situations.
Don’t skip your daily walks or gym visits during the summer season. It’s tempting to kick back and indulge but it’s also a good idea to stay moderately active. The holidays can get busy with family visits and social gatherings, so get your regular workout session done early in the morning. Come January when everyone’s rushing back to the gym, your body will thank you for staying relatively healthy!
Yes, we know, it’s the season of indulgence, but make it a priority to eat at least one vegetable a day. We can’t say enough good things about the benefits of green veggies so enjoy your cake… but have a few carrots, a salad, or a spinach smoothie first.
