Pharmacy Q&A

Q: Tell us a bit about your journey to becoming a pharmacist

A: Helping people was always my passion and I knew I wanted to make a difference. Because I came from humble beginnings, I worked very hard to excel academically and secured a place to study for my B.Pharm degree to reach my goal.

To me, it was never about the money, but the satisfaction of making a sustainable difference to the health care system that fuelled my journey and passion.

Q: What makes your job worthwhile?

A: I am a simple person with a big heart, but I believe that my empathy and willingness to help the sick, as well as those who just seek advice, is something so special - and you cannot take away that serenity knowing that my profession allows me to make an impact on someone’s health and life.

Q: What's your favourite Medirite product for staying healthy?

A: Medirite Vitamin B Complex-- this is my go-to vitamin as its helps to keep me energised and also supports a healthy nervous system, which is required in our fast-paced and stressful duty as first-line healthcare professionals.

Q: What's the most common query from patients at the pharmacy?

A: Funnily enough,  its the new Ozempic craze that's hit the world and our shores - and people are going crazy over this new "wonder drug ".  A lot of my time is spent explaining to patients about this molecule and its correct uses, as well the possible side effects.

The current worldwide shortage as well doesn't help, so I have to suggest alternatives and also liaise with their doctors regarding the alternatives and its suitability per individual patient.

Q: What allergy tips can you give us for the season?

A: Start early with an antihistamine and don't wait for the symptoms to hit hard before taking action. I would recommend our brand-new in-house brand of ALLERMINE, as well as FEXOGEN as  good medications to keep in their medication cupboard.

I would also suggest using glasses to protect the pollen from getting into the patient’s eyes , and avoiding the irritation, especially if they are going out in high pollen-count areas. Nasal flushes are also a good natural alternative to flush out the sensitive nasal mucosa, as well as an antihistamine nasal spray for those who are prone to excessive sneezing and rhinitis.

Another important piece of advice would be to know your drugs - ask which is sedating and non-sedating so as to prevent unwanted drowsiness as a side effect.

We must also not underestimate the importance of eating healthy to strengthen our immune system and ease the symptoms.

Q: Are there any experiences that have left a lasting impact on you as a pharmacist?

A: The gratitude from a patient that was successfully treated by you, leaves the biggest imprint in my heart.

A simple "thank you for making me feel better" imprints the biggest emotion and impacts positively on my day-to-day duties.
