Should you wear new clothes without washing them

Should you wear new clothes without washing them?

We all love that feeling of slipping into a brand-new outfit; the crispness of the fabric, the bold colours or patterns, and that unbeatable feeling of freshness. But did you know that new clothes are often loaded with chemicals, bacteria and other nasties that can cause skin irritation and other health problems?

If you're the type who can't resist the urge to immediately throw on your brand-new clothes, be prepared to pay the price in the form of a potential rash, infection or skin irritation. Not a fashion statement anyone wants to make…

That's why washing your new clothes before wearing them is a good idea. Let's dive in (with a little soap and water)!

New clothes = pathogens, germs and bacteria

According to a study published in the National Library of Medicine, some new clothes may contain bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, which can cause skin infections and other health issues.

New clothes may look and feel fresh, but they can be a happy home for all sorts of harmful germs and chemicals. Remember, clothes are made in massive factories, and clothing manufacturers use various chemicals and treatments during the production process to enhance the fabric’s appearance, texture and durability.

For example, they may use formaldehyde to prevent wrinkles, or dyes that can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions. Clothes can also pick up bacteria and other germs, such as the Norovirus and bits of faecal matter, during transport and handling, and from other people trying them on in stores. No thanks!

Washing new clothes is a must

Washing your freshly bought clothes helps to remove these germs, bacteria and other harmful pathogens. It can also help eliminate any funky smells or residues that might have built up while they were being stored or shipped.  Also, washing new clothes isn't just about avoiding potential health risks. It can improve the look and feel of your clothes. By washing them, you soften the fabric and eliminate any stiffness or roughness caused by the manufacturing process. This can make your clothes more comfortable to wear and help them last longer.

Another benefit of washing new clothes is to prevent shrinkage and help maintain their shape. Sometimes clothes can be labelled as one size but may shrink after the first wash. By washing before wearing, you can avoid unpleasant surprises and make sure your new clothes fit perfectly.

How to wash new clothes

1. First, always check the garment's care label to ensure you're using the right washing and drying settings.

2. Use a mild washing powder or liquid, free of harsh chemicals and fragrances. Avoid using fabric softeners or dryer sheets, which can leave a residue on the clothes and cause skin irritation.

3. If you're washing clothes that are brightly coloured or patterned, wash them separately or with other like-coloured clothes to prevent the colours from running.

4. Dry the clothes on a low or medium heat setting and avoid over-drying, which can cause shrinkage and damage to the fabric.

Now that you know how to steer clear of nasty chemicals lurking in your clothes, consider shopping for organic clothing made from natural fibres. Not all cotton, linen or wool clothes are created equal, so reading the care labels is important. Even with natural fibres, manufacturers may use chemicals to prevent mildew if exposed to moisture during the long journey from overseas manufacturers.

By being mindful of these factors and doing your due diligence, you can make informed choices about your clothes and reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals.
